Wisdom for the Day: Proverbs 3:1–2
Proverbs 3
1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
How long do we spend looking for things?
In his book “When the game is over it all comes back in the box”, Author John Ortberg claims that an average person wastes approximately a year of their life looking for lost possessions. Those of us that scramble about looking for car keys, wallets, glasses, slippers. “Have you seen my_____?” Is a favourite expression in my house and I’m usually the one making it. I usually have a general idea where to start looking so at least that’s a start. Another starting point is the question where did I have it last? Remembering is very important in the search for what you have lost.
I wonder how long we spend looking for peace? For some it’s a lifetime and still they don’t find it. This proverb tells us the benefits of remembering Gods teaching and not allowing it a fleeting passage across your memory banks, but keeping it in our hearts. Making it a part of who we are. When we do that it will prolong our lives, bring us peace and prosperity.
What struck me about that is, it is God’s commands that bring us peace. We don’t have to spend our lives looking for it, when we allow the word of God to find its place in our hearts, peace will be the fruit of that. We wont need to spend our lives endlessly searching for it.
In life the reason many do not find that peace is that they look for it in the wrong place.
Our part is to remember God’s teaching, so may the peace of God be with you today.
