Wisdom for the Day: Proverbs 2:1
Proverbs 2
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
How much value do you put on God’s word? The proverb tells us that unless we place it above everything else, we won’t gain wisdom. And without wisdom, we wont succeed.
The value you put on something usually determines the intensity and effort you put into finding it. Another factor that comes into the mix is the consequences of not finding it. Sometimes I mislay my wallet, I don’t carry that much money around with me but if my debit or credit cards get lost I am going to have to cancel in case someone gets their hands on them and empties our bank account. We all know the hassle it causes to cancel our cards so we search for the missing wallet. We ask other people if they have seen it, we phone up the shops we were in.
Another reason we might search for something vigorously is the sentimental value we hold for it. Maybe it is a ticket for a concert or a football match you have been to. Maybe it is a photograph that is precious to you.
In all these things we attach a value to these things and the value is dependant upon how important it is to you. I remember I lost a rolex watch once and because it was a fake bought in a foreign port, I hardly even bothered to look for it. It didn’t cost me much and I didn’t particularly like it.
Where Gods words are not important to you, you wont really attach much importance to them, you certainly wouldn’t consider them as treasure.
Proverbs, the book of wisdom obviously attaches a high value to wisdom. When we value God, when we listen to his word as a priority, where we accept and apply his teaching and let it reside in our hearts, then we will succeed. Success may look very different to each one of us but what ever it is for you, the best way to find it is to value Gods word.
It is the treasure Jesus’ parable describes that is buried in the field.
