Psalms of Comfort 11: Our Protection Plan
Psalm 55
23 Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.
We are presented throughout our lives with protection plans. There are mortgage protection plans, income protection plans, health protection plans, dental protection plans, life insurance protection plans and even funeral protection plans. These are presented depending upon our circumstances and invariably these protection plans are dressed up and offered to be for our benefit but someone else profits from them. Everything seems to cost.
The strange thing about God’s protection plan is that it costs everything but it is free.
God has paid for our protection. It cost Him His Son Jesus Christ who came to show us the way to the Father and who bore our burden of sin on the cross, costing Him His life. By Gods free grace we have been saved when we believe that and place our faith in Jesus. We don’t have to make a claim, we only have to make a prayer, and even then, God knows what we need before we ask.
I wonder how many burdens Jesus is carrying for us that we know nothing about? We’re aware of some. He carries our sin. He carries our shame. He carries our eternal debt. But are there others? Has he lifted fears before we felt them? Are we surprised by our own sense of peace? Perhaps in this corona virus world, is there a sense of peace and calm that ought not to be there when we are faced by so much uncertainty? Though we are faced with uncertainty we are also faced with the certainty of Gods protection plan for us. He has lifted so much already from our shoulders that would have weighed us down.
It’s like Christian in Pilgrims Progress, weighed down by this weight of sin, desperate to get rid of the sack of sin upon his back he comes to the cross and the weight of his burden tumbles of his back. A quote from the book:
“Then Christian was glad and relieved and he said with a joyful heart. ‘He has given me rest from my sorrow and life through his death’. Then he stood still awhile to look and wonder, for he was surprised that the sight of the cross should ease him of his burden in such a way.”
I wonder if we need to stand and look a while in wonder at the cross of Christ—Gods protection plan.
The thing with these other protection plans is that they have a time limit on them, Gods protection plan is eternal.
Cast your cares upon the Lord and he will sustain you, he will never let the righteous be shaken. We are made righteous through Jesus Christ and his finished work on the cross.
