Wisdom for the Day: Proverbs 2
There is so much in life that we don’t understand yet proverbs holds it up as B all and end all. The ultimate goal with the ultimate benefit. Sometimes we come across things in life that are too difficult for us to understand and we give up trying. I remember trying to understand celestial navigation while I was in Nautical college and I just couldn’t grasp it. No matter how hard I tried I just got lost, I didn’t understand the theory behind it, I didn’t understand this imaginary point at the top of the celestial sphere, the visible universe called the Zenith. I could do the maths and the calculations and find the ships position from star sights but explaining the theory behind it was beyond me.
Unfortunately I had to pass the subject to get the qualification I needed to get a job. It was the subject most people failed on. Despite the frustration of not understanding, I had to apply myself to it and eventually I got there. The understanding I speak about here is understanding a man made theory, a framework on which to hang the way we do things.
The understanding spoken about in chapter 2 of proverbs is understanding the words and commands of God.
Proverbs 2
6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
To get to that place of understanding we need to have to want it and apply ourselves to it.
Proverbs 2
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—Then you will achieve wisdom’s goal.
9 Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
Don’t fear, there is no pass mark here, all we can do is try to understand and apply ourselves to that understanding. The understanding of Gods word should be the framework on which we hang the way we do things.
