Psalms of Comfort 9: Psalm 138, The Divine Presence

Is it better to think poorly of ourselves or Highly of ourselves?

Our place in life is one thing that society in keen to labels us with. Your status, your popularity, how much you earn, what job you are doing, how you look, how you dress, where you live, the holidays you go on, the company you keep. Our goal in life seems to be a pursuit to think more highly of ourselves, to achieve more and to improve our place. Strive, strive, strive. If and when we get there can be a smug satisfaction as other people start to notice us and pay attention to us and treat us with more respect.

It is all so false and the last couple of months has seen a great levelling and a recognition that each one of us is no better or no worse than anyone else. That is after all how God sees us. He doesn’t favour one over the other. All He requires is that we bow down before Him and worship Him. What do we get in return, Grace!

Even thou He dwells in magnificent splendour, worshipped by billions across the world, He answers us when we call out to Him. Imagine if our queen were to stop and talk to everyone that cheers her as she passes by on a public engagement, she would be there all day. She passes by, the celebrities on the red carpet pass by their adoring fans. The Lord has all the time in the word for you when we call out to Him. Thou you are lofty and exalted you stoop to embrace the lowly. But He keeps his distance from the proud. Because the proud keep their distance from Him.

By His power and under His protection we can walk through any devastation. We see the devastation of society around us as the world economy has collapsed but our status before God has not changed and He is faithful to those that call on Him.

Lets not think anything of ourselves, let’s not think neither good nor bad, let’s think instead of God and ask Him to finish every good thing He has begun in us. It is not our status before man that matters when all is said and done, it is our status before God.
